With the Subiaco United club season review tomorrow and the SSS soccer tournament on Saturday, it looks set for another soccer-filled weekend… Other than that the week has been relatively fruitful just by doing the simple things such as participating in Operation Christmas Child where we had to pack a few little things for a young child in a poor country.  Although I’ll probably never get to see the recipient, I’m perfectly sure that the child will benefit from the little gifts that I’ve placed in the specially designed shoe box.  Sometimes as pple from developed and affluent countries, we tend to moan and complain about what we don’t have especially if you are from a country where consumerism drives the economy e.g. Singapore.  This despite the fact that it’s relatively apparent that 4 billion pple around the world earn less than 2 dollars a day and many more do not have enough to even fill their stomachs.

This problem gets increasingly disturbing when you have people judging you not for the content of your character but for the job you have, the car you drive or how big your house is.  Why should such a culture infiltrate the original values of respecting each other, caring for another another and loving your neighbour?  Don’t you originally make friends based on the fact that you click or get along and not how much you earn?  What is wrong with society these days?  I believe that the problem stems from an elitist culture within a society.  When the rich and well-off start to elevate themselves based on money and social standing, this trend spreads down the pipeline.  It then becomes like a mini-food chain where the rich lord over the lower rich, the lower rich over the higher middle income earners and so on and so forth.  This is not to say that all rich people are arrogant and conceited but the fact that a substantial number of them exist influences the mindsets of the people especially when academic and commercial excellence is over-emphasised above everything else.  Let us learn to love each other for who we are and not for what we earn..=)

Cheers,

Dan

Prayer for today:

Dear Heavenly Father, I pray against this spirit of materialism that is engulfing Singapore at the moment.  Lord, I pray that you open the hearts and minds of the people to understand that material riches isn’t the be all and end all to life and that there are so many other aspects that require attention such as family, hobbies and most importantly Your word.  In the Saviour’s name I pray.  Amen.
